Schultüte ~ School Cones!

We are not of German descent, neither are any of my children starting 1st grade, but I just loved these german school cones, when I saw them on another blog a while back.  They are traditionally given to german school children upon entering first grade, as a gift to help them adjust to starting school.  They are usually filled with school supplies, stationery, sweets and other nice things.  I thought they were SO cool, that I sacrificed a couple of hours of my precious time (that I could have spent doing chores)...and made a schultüte for each of my children!

It was hard to find any directions online, so I looked on the afore linked blog and google images for picture ideas and got started.  Being the dedicated blogger that I am, I took pictures the whole way through, so as to provide b.a.s.i.c guidelines for anyone else wishing to make them...

I selected two pieces of card...

Next I taped them toegther, to make one large sheet...

My helper Smelly-Belly!

With a piece of string tied to a pencil,
I drew a curve at the top of my card and cut it out...

Starting from the botom left edge I rolled my card up into
a cone and secured it with tape (the peg just helped a little)...

Next I glued a double layer of tissue paper inside the cone...

Then I decorated it, (I hope to do better next year)!

I popped a small amount of tissue paper in the bottom
of the cone, to fill up the pointy end

A sample of what I put into each...
I also added sweets and a few other small novelty items

Twins On The Farm!

Just a couple of days ago, for the first time ever, TWIN calves were born on our farm!!!  Everyone was SO happy!!!  The wonderful mama cow is our favourite, she has borne many calves, including the black/white vasectomised bull in the photos.  They are now all one big happy bovine family! :)

"And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee:
he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land,
thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine,
and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy
fathers to give thee.  Thou shalt be blessed above all people:
there shall not be male or female barren among you,
or among your cattle" ~ Deuteronomy 7:13-14

Lots Of Pictures And An Update!

Miss Meg Having Fun With Rice...

**Beware - This Activity Makes A TERRIBLE Mess!!!**

Dylan Injured His Hand Outside With Dad...
So He Decided To Play With Meg

We have had a VERY busy few weeks!  Firstly we were all sick, with the exception of my husband who miraculously escaped the plague that did the rounds within our home!  Secondly my parents have needed to move in with us whilst their cottage is being rewired, so things have been hugely a little more chaotic than usual.  We are trying to maintain our usual routine, and for the most part this has been relatively easy since we are not yet back-to-school.

Speaking of which, our official back-to-school date is TOMORROW!!!  We have enjoyed a very long holiday this year, and I haven't really felt the urge to rush back to school since everyone was able to keep busy and stay out of mischief!  Dylan is SO looking forward to beginning his new books for this year...especially Galloping the Globe!  He LOVES to help me with the cooking, so he can't wait to try and make the different dishes as we study each country.  Even though Amy does have her own geography curriculum...we decided that she could participate with Galloping the Globe too, as she thought she also would really like to cook those different cuisines!

My husband and I made some big decisions about our homeschooling last year, and so we are looking forward to trying new things out and pruning aspects that were not working so well...etc.  The Holy Spirit has really given me such a PEACE about our schooling this year!

My Lovely Hubby!

The kids and I are over our sicknesses now.  Poor Dylan and Meg got it the worst; with Dylan having the worst cough and Meg having the worst fever.  Someone also advised me to try Lobelia extract to help with Dylan's cough as it is a natural expectorant...I'm pleased to report that it worked very well, alongside the TWO JARS of homemade cough syrup we used!!!  Praise God that we all mended up very quickly and thank you to all who prayed for us!

My Son, The BRIGHT SPARK! :)

Just this weekend we hosted all of our church friends at our home for fellowship, food and FUN!!  The ladies at our church helped and brought some food to share which was such a blessing...especially since they can all cook so well!!  My mum also cooked her legendary beef stew for us all to enjoy...it was so good and everyone raved about it! We had such a great time and we are looking forward to doing it again in the future.  We are so thankful to have found such a wonderful church home and family!!

Poor Dylan; try as he might, it is just plain hard to read the newspaper in peace around here!  Always someone wants to play or participate in whatever you are doing.  It would wear a boy out!

Carcassone

We HEART Carcassone!

My Pestilential Opponent!

Over the last few days an awful cold/cough has been making the rounds in our home.  First, the littles had it, next in line was Amy and over the last two days I also have been infected!!! Bleurgh!!!  Thank you for any who were praying for us...you'll be glad to know Dylan and Meg are now almost fully well again.

Last evening the when the house was all quiet (Dylan was out on the tractor with my husband and Meg was sleeping) Amy suggested that we play Carcassone.  So in between sniffing, sneezing and blowing our noses a whole lot, we did indeed play!

This game is FANTASTIC and doesn't take a long time to play a whole game, unlike Settlers of Catan.  I think game play is approximately 40 minutes.  Though it must be said that Catan is still my all time favourite board game!  Carcassone is easy to set up, play and score.  It really does depend mostly on the luck-of-the-draw, but some strategy is involved if you want to score quickly and/or big.

We found that this game is easy to adapt for playing with little people too.  Dylan will often ask to play alone with me after Amy and I have finished.  Sometimes he just likes to lay out the tiles and construct a landscape or the biggest city possible...etc.

I can certainly recommend this game for fun family play! :)
